Robotic sanding is an investment to quality and productivity

ROBOTIC SANDING IMPROVES FURNITURE MANUFACTURING

In our production we have taken a new step using robot technologies. New robot sanding cell is now in production.

Automatic sanding cell takes care of the seat top final sanding. First production runs have already taken place.

With high volume products, it is possible to tailor a specific robotic sanding cell. Total benefit of the investment will come clear with time, but we can already see how the output has increased. Eventually we can run our own tests to see which other products can be sanded with a robot.

Investing in robotics means that we can move people from boring work to more demanding work. Work safety is extremely important, and robots are a way to improve overall conditions.

Customer demand can now be satisfied with better quality and delivery accuracy. This investment will improve our capacity and productivity.

IDEA TO REALITY

The idea of robot sanding came alive already in 2019 when Mirka Airos sanding machine was published. The first tests took place at Mirka in their product development lab.

During past years robot technology has taken a giant leap. Technical solutions are available and ready, question is how and where to use them. Threshold for us was not high since robotics has been a part of our DNA for very long time.

Past eight months we have studied and tested robot sanding with Mirka and other suppliers to make sure our idea will work.

Basically, our sanding cell has been designed at house. Robots were supplied by ABB Robotics and sanding machine by Mirka. Safety cabinet was made by a company next to us. Assembly and implementation were done by ourselves following all the safety standards.

FOUR DECADES OF ROBOTICS

Robots have been part of our furniture manufacturing since 80s.

First robot for painting was installed as early as 1982. At the time it was revolutionary. In fact, that painting robot was the very first to start working in furniture manufacturing in Finland. Later other companies adopted painting robots also.

The man behind the idea was our founder Pertti Mäenpää. He was also in charge of the implementation. After robot was used, it changed the production significantly. Chairs were lacquered with bottom layer and top layer by robot. Capacity was increased which also meant better competitiveness. Conveyer was built to move the chairs so robot could spray lacquer on them.” I remember being 13 years old and helping my father build the conveyer system.” Says present CEO Pasi Mäenpää.

Presently we have two painting robots in use among the sanding cell robots.
When looking at the furniture industry, robots have been used for years. Although not in that extent they could be used. We are convinced that robotics will take bigger role in small furniture factories within next five years. Robots are going to do all those boring work phases and release labor to more demanding phases. Lack of skilled work force is not going to disappear in the future. Robotics is the answer.

SLOW MARKET GIVES TIME TO BUILD NEW

Furniture market slowed down significantly this fall. Eventually it will pick up. Small signs of increasing demand are showing.

We would have invested this sanding cell in every case, but slow market gave us an opportunity to focus on developing and building this sanding unit. Therefore, the startup was successful.

Result is that we are ready for the upcoming demand from the market.

Awarded for quality and responsibility

CERTIFIED QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

We are proud to announce that our company, Senkki Oy, has achieved two important goals in the field of quality and responsibility development: we have been awarded the ISO 9001 Quality Management Certificate and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certificate.

For us, quality and responsibility are not just words but also concrete actions in everyday business life. When you can measure things, you can improve them. That is why we have created quality management and environmental management systems for our company.

We had been considering applying for ISO certification for several years, and last year we felt it was the right time to start the process. During the process, we created our own quality management and environmental management systems and took measures to improve our practices.

We decided to apply for ISO 9001 certification for quality management because we want to invest in improving and developing our operations. The ISO 9001 Quality Management System is a particularly good tool for this purpose because it is based on a continuous improvement model.

ISO 9001 is the world’s best-known tool for building and developing a quality management system. In the furniture industry, larger businesses already have ISO quality management certificates, but they are not yet very common in our size range. In other sectors, such as metal industry, ISO certificates are more common, even among smaller companies.

In the wood and furniture industry, the traceability of wood origin is also important for quality management, and we have already been awarded PEFC certification for that in the past. Matters related to the tracing of wood origin have now been integrated into our new quality management system. As far as wood sustainability is concerned, we see our next target as being FSC certification, which is another system – used both in Finland and internationally – to ensure that the wood comes from responsibly managed sources.

Creating our own quality management system was a slightly simpler process for us compared to the environmental system, as we have had the same type of quality requirements in place since the early 2000s, to which we are committed as a subcontractor.

The establishment of the environmental management system has been more noticeable in the daily life of the company. All aspects related to it are now in place and we have ensured that all the standard and legal requirements are met. Sustainability is present in everything we do, from waste management to reducing the amount of waste produced. In practice, environmental awareness is reflected in the recycling of cardboard and plastic and the minimized use of all packaging materials. With the new environmental management system, we have also sought to reduce the environmental impact of transportation by making our logistics more efficient and, thus, sustainable.

Although obtaining certification is important to us, we did not create quality management and environmental systems for the sake of it but, first and foremost, to improve and develop the company. We are ambitious and hope that in the long term our quality management system will bring tangible results in terms of fewer errors, more efficient use of resources and improved profitability. We are moving forward on the right track.

Senkki Oy Receives the Rantasalmi Award

AWARD FOR KNOWLEDGE IN WOOD DESIGN AND CARE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

On May 15, 2018, our company received the Rantasalmi award for 20,000 €. The award recognizes our knowledge in wood design and care for sustainable development. Senkki’s COB Pertti Mäenpää and CEO Pasi Mäenpää received the award in the fund’s annual celebration in Pieksämäki.

When Päivikki Eskelinen-Rönkä, the representative for South Savo Regional Fund called our CEO Pasi Mäenmää in April to announce the award, we first felt disbelief: the award came as a complete surprise. The Finnish Cultural Foundation and its regional funds do not state reasons for their decisions, so the ultimate arguments for the award may remain a mystery.

South Savonia is the most densely forested region in Finland, and it produces wood material that our company in Jurva, South Ostrobothnian refines into components and design furniture. Our CEO Pasi Mäenpää guesses that deriving Savonian raw material is the reason why Senkki was honored with the award. The award itself lists reasons that are directly linked to our company’s values and strong knowledge and know-how.

THE RANTASALMI AWARD SUPPORTS VITALITY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND INDUSTRY

“Since 1941, the Finnish Cultural Foundation has given out awards as recognition for outstanding achievements in different fields of Finnish culture. In addition to the Cultural Foundation, 17 Regional Funds also give out awards for notable life’s work or other achievements carried out in the area.” The Finnish Cultural Foundation

The South Savo Regional Fund is one of the regional funds under The Finnish Cultural Foundation.

The Rantasalmi fund is based on a donation made by CEO Osmo Ruotsalainen in 1976. “The purpose of the fund is to grant Rantasalmi awards, and to support the entrepreneurship and industry of South Savonian people so that their home region may remain vital.” The Finnish Cultural Foundation

Interior architect and designer Tapio Anttila received the Rantasalmi award in 2017.

Story of Jurva – Proud to be part of it

Story of Jurva

THE VILLAGE OF FURNITURE MAKERS

Have you ever heard about this place called Jurva?

Jurva is a small village located in the town of Kurikka, province of Western Finland.  Village is known of skilled cabinetmakers, silent woodcarving and high quality furniture manufacturing.

Our factory is located in Jurva. We stand for the legacy of furniture manufacturing. This short film is made to tell the Story of Jurva and we are proud to be part of it.

Story of Jurva is part of the programme for the centenary of Finland’s independence in 2017.

STORY OF SENKKI

Back in the day nearly every house in Jurva had a workshop that built furniture. When machinery wasn’t efficient enough, we built our own. By automating our production innovatively, we became more cost efficient and agile than others.

Although the number of furniture manufacturers in Jurva has gone down, our open-mindedness and ability to grow have carried us through the tough times.

Today, we’re a third-generation family business, manufacturing solid wood components and chairs to our clients with forty years of experience.

The secret behind quality components

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF QUALITY WOOD MANUFACTURING

Senkki Oy, which was founded in 1977, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. To honor this special occasion, we revised our company’s visual identity to communicate the values that form the cornerstones of our business:

Superior quality, trusted partnership with our clients, and efficiency in everything we do.

Authenticity, integrity, and honest work – that’s what Senkki is made of.

The new colour scheme is derived from our factory. The new primary colour is greenish grey, which comes from our machinery. Our new photographs show grey from concrete and brown from cardboard and of course wood in all its shades.

The photographs document everyday life in our factory – the place where our quality wooden components and chairs come from.

The new circular symbol represents Senkki at the core of wood. The annual rings stand for the three principles of our company: quality, partnership, and efficiency. The S in the centre symbolises a spinning blade.

A rolling stone gathers no moss, and a spinning blade does not rust. Let’s keep the blades spinning.
